Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade was released alongside a film of the same name, commonly described as its visual album.
Lemonade premiered on HBO on April 23, 2016, and its audio album became available digitally the following day. The project combines songs with poetry, spoken narration, and carefully staged imagery. Its themes include identity, family, betrayal, healing, Black womanhood, and cultural memory.
The album draws on multiple musical styles, including R&B, rock, country, reggae, and hip-hop. Guest artists include Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. Its release structure helped popularize the phrase “visual album” in mainstream music discussion.
Black Is King is a separate Beyoncé visual album, released in 2020 and connected to The Lion King: The Gift. Lemonade should also not be confused with its individual songs, such as “Formation” or “Hold Up.”
