Beyoncé's 2016 visual album exploring Black womanhood and family is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, alongside an hour-long film broadcast on HBO. The project combines songs, poetry, and visual chapters that move through themes including betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, identity, ancestry, and family.
The album drew on a wide range of musical traditions, including R&B, rock, country, blues, soul, and hip-hop. Its credited collaborators included Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. The project was widely discussed for its representation of Black Southern women and its historical imagery.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. It is often called a “visual album” because its music and film were designed as one connected work.
