Which Beyoncé song features a prominent sample from “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)”?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love” features a prominent sample from “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So).”

The 2003 song was produced by Rich Harrison and Beyoncé for her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. Its famous horn hook comes from the 1970 song “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)” by the Chicago soul group the Chi-Lites. The sample gives the track its instantly recognizable brass-driven opening.

“Crazy in Love” also features a guest rap from Jay-Z, who was Beyoncé’s collaborator and later husband. Listeners sometimes attribute the horn line to an original brass recording made specifically for Beyoncé, but the musical idea is based on Harrison’s use of the Chi-Lites recording.
