Which Beyoncé song became her first solo single to top the Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

“Crazy in Love” became Beyoncé’s first solo single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Released in 2003, the song features rapper Jay-Z and appears on Beyoncé’s debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. Its production was led by Rich Harrison, who built the track around a prominent horn sample from the Chi-Lites’ 1970 song “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So).”

The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and became one of the defining pop and R&B records of the early 2000s. Its energetic video, directed by Jake Nava, also helped establish Beyoncé’s solo visual identity.

“Baby Boy” and “Irreplaceable” were later Beyoncé chart-toppers, but “Crazy in Love” was the first of her solo singles to lead the Hot 100. The recording is distinct from her earlier group work with Destiny’s Child.
