The Beyoncé music video featuring her dancing with a baseball bat in a yellow dress is “Hold Up.”
“Hold Up” appears on Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade. Its video forms part of the album’s visual film, in which Beyoncé moves through different settings while expressing anger, grief, resilience, and reconciliation. In the widely recognized sequence, she walks through a street in a flowing yellow Roberto Cavalli dress and smashes car windows with a baseball bat.
The video was directed by Jonas Åkerlund, with additional creative direction credited to Beyoncé. The song itself combines reggae, pop, and alternative influences and includes interpolations or samples connected to songs by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Soulja Boy, and Father John Misty.
The bat scene is often incorrectly attributed to “Formation,” another Lemonade song with a famous video. “Formation” includes imagery about Black Southern identity and police violence, but the yellow dress and bat belong specifically to “Hold Up.”
