The Lion King received Beyoncé an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song in 2020.
Beyoncé voiced Nala in Disney's 2019 computer-animated remake of The Lion King. She also contributed the original song "Spirit" to the film's soundtrack. The song was written by Beyoncé, Ilya Salmanzadeh, and Timothy McKenzie, who is credited as Labrinth.
"Spirit" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 92nd Academy Awards, held in 2020. The nomination recognized the song rather than Beyoncé's voice acting or the film's other music. The track also appeared on The Lion King: The Gift, a companion album curated by Beyoncé.
The film was directed by Jon Favreau and used photorealistic computer animation. It features Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, and James Earl Jones reprising the voice of Mufasa from the 1994 animated film.
