Black Is King is Beyoncé’s visual album inspired by Black culture and released with a 2020 film. It was released on Disney+ on July 31, 2020, approximately one year after the 2019 premiere of The Lion King remake.
The project reimagines music from The Lion King: The Gift, Beyoncé’s companion album to the film. Its visuals draw on African and diasporic fashion, dance, symbolism, family, spirituality, and contemporary Black identity.
Beyoncé wrote, directed, and executive-produced Black Is King. The project was not simply a conventional concert film: it used interconnected music videos and cinematic sequences to create a visual narrative. It also featured numerous artists and performers connected to The Lion King: The Gift.
