Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album accompanying “Formation” was Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after its premiere as an hour-long film on HBO. The project combined music, poetry, spoken passages, and visual storytelling, making the album a unified audiovisual work rather than a conventional collection of unrelated videos.
Its songs address themes including love, betrayal, family, Black identity, womanhood, and resilience. “Formation,” released as the album’s lead single, became especially associated with the project’s cultural impact and imagery.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received broad critical acclaim. It is sometimes mixed up with Renaissance, Beyoncé’s seventh studio album from 2022, but Renaissance was a separate project and did not accompany “Formation.”
