Dreamgirls features Beyoncé as Deena Jones, a member of the Dreams.
The 2006 film, directed by Bill Condon, adapts the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Its story follows a fictional female singing group and draws on aspects of the history of Motown, the Supremes, and other performers navigating the American music industry.
Beyoncé plays Deena Jones, alongside Jennifer Hudson as Effie White and Anika Noni Rose as Lorrell Robinson. The film’s central conflict involves ambition, management, changing musical tastes, and the unequal treatment of artists within the entertainment business.
Dreamgirls is often confused with Beyoncé’s other acting projects. In Cadillac Records, she played singer Etta James, while in Obsessed she played Sharon Charles in a psychological thriller. Dreamgirls is the film in which her character belongs to the fictional group the Dreams.
