King Richard earned Beyoncé an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song for “Be Alive.”
The 2021 film is a sports biographical drama about Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams. Will Smith stars as Richard Williams, while the story follows the family’s determined effort to develop the sisters’ careers.
Beyoncé and songwriter Dixson wrote “Be Alive” for the film. The song plays over the end credits and celebrates family, perseverance, and Black achievement. It was nominated for Best Original Song at the 94th Academy Awards, held in 2022.
The film is sometimes confused with Beyoncé’s acting roles in Dreamgirls, Cadillac Records, or The Lion King. Those projects feature Beyoncé as an actress or voice performer, but King Richard is the film connected to her Academy Award-nominated song “Be Alive.”
