Carmen: A Hip Hopera
Answer
Carmen: A Hip Hopera
Beyoncé’s film debut was the 2001 MTV television movie Carmen: A Hip Hopera. She played Carmen Brown, a modern adaptation of the central character from Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen.
The film relocated the story from nineteenth-century Seville to contemporary Los Angeles and expressed much of its plot through hip-hop, rhythm and blues, and spoken dialogue. Robert Townsend directed the production, and Mekhi Phifer played the male lead, Hill, whose character corresponds broadly to Don José in the opera.
Carmen: A Hip Hopera is sometimes overlooked because Beyoncé later became better known for theatrical films such as Austin Powers in Goldmember and Dreamgirls. It nevertheless came first in her screen career. The production also connects her music background with acting: she was already a successful Destiny’s Child performer when she took the title role.
