Beyoncé was the first Beyoncé album released without advance announcement.
Beyoncé released the self-titled album unexpectedly on December 13, 2013, through iTunes. The project arrived with no conventional pre-release campaign, and every song was accompanied by a music video. Beyoncé described it as a visual album, making the release both a musical project and a coordinated collection of films.
The surprise strategy changed how major albums could reach audiences and quickly became known as a “visual album” rollout. The record includes “Drunk in Love,” “Partition,” and “Pretty Hurts,” with guest appearances from Jay-Z, Drake, Frank Ocean, and others. Beyoncé’s later album Lemonade also combined music and film, but it was announced through a televised premiere and promotional campaign rather than arriving in the same completely unannounced way.
