Beyoncé was the surprise digital album release that changed the music industry in 2013.
Beyoncé’s self-titled fifth studio album appeared on the iTunes Store without advance announcement on December 13, 2013. The release included 14 songs and 17 accompanying music videos, so Beyoncé described it as a “visual album.” The unexpected launch was announced through a short video message rather than a conventional promotional campaign.
The album’s songs include “Drunk in Love,” “Partition,” “Flawless,” and “Pretty Hurts.” It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, making Beyoncé the first female artist to have her first five studio albums debut at number one in the United States.
The album’s release strategy became a major reference point for surprise launches in the streaming and digital-download era. It is distinct from Lemonade, which also arrived with a tightly controlled rollout but was released in 2016 and initially connected to an HBO film premiere.
