Lemonade was the Beyoncé album released on April 23, 2016, alongside a film on HBO.
The album arrived after the premiere of Lemonade, a one-hour visual album film broadcast by HBO. Its songs explore themes including infidelity, grief, anger, reconciliation, Black womanhood, and family history. Beyoncé drew on multiple musical styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, soul, and hip-hop.
Lemonade includes songs such as “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Daddy Lessons,” and “All Night.” Its guest artists include Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. The work also features spoken poetry by Warsan Shire.
The album received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards, while “Formation” and “Daddy Lessons” received major recognition. Lemonade is distinct from Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled visual album, which was released without advance promotion.
