Lemonade was the Beyoncé album released in 2016 with a film premiered on HBO.
The project was released on April 23, 2016, after the premiere of its accompanying hour-long film on HBO. It combines music, poetry, and visual storytelling, moving through chapters associated with emotional and cultural themes. The album draws on R&B, rock, country, blues, pop, and hip-hop.
Its tracks include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” “Formation” became especially significant for its celebration of Black identity and its references to Beyoncé’s Southern heritage, including Houston and Louisiana.
Lemonade is sometimes confused with Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled visual album because both projects integrate videos into a larger artistic presentation. It is also different from Homecoming, the 2019 live album and documentary connected with her 2018 Coachella performances.
