Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album was Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. It arrived first as a surprise digital release and was accompanied by a one-hour film broadcast on HBO. The album combines R&B, pop, soul, hip-hop, blues, rock, and New Orleans musical influences.
Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” The visual project uses imagery, poetry, and regional history to explore identity, betrayal, family, Black womanhood, and resilience. Beyoncé drew on a large group of songwriters and producers, making the album a collaborative work despite its strongly unified presentation.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received widespread critical acclaim. It is often confused with “Formation,” which is a song on the album, not the album’s title.
