Lemonade was the Beyoncé album released in 2016 as a visual album about marriage and identity.
The project premiered on HBO as a one-hour film alongside the album. Its songs and accompanying visuals explore themes including betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, Black womanhood, family, and cultural heritage.
Lemonade drew on multiple musical styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, pop, and hip-hop. It features contributions from artists such as Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. The album became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200.
It is sometimes described only as a breakup or relationship album, but its scope is broader. The work also incorporates poetry by Warsan Shire and imagery connected to Black history, the American South, and Beyoncé’s family.
