Lemonade is the Beyoncé album released in 2016 that includes “Formation” and “Sorry.”
Beyoncé released Lemonade on April 23, 2016, through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. It arrived alongside a 65-minute film broadcast on HBO, combining music videos, poetry, narration, and visual symbolism. The project was presented as a unified album and film rather than merely a collection of unrelated singles.
The album explores themes including betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, Black identity, family, and womanhood. Its songs draw on R&B, pop, hip-hop, rock, country, blues, and other traditions. “Formation,” released before the album, became especially associated with Black Southern culture and political imagery.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and debuted at number one in the United States. It was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, while “Formation” won Best Music Video. A frequent mix-up is treating Lemonade as only a film; it is also Beyoncé’s sixth studio album.
