Beyoncé’s first group with Kelly Rowland before Destiny’s Child was called Girl’s Tyme. The group formed in Houston in 1990 and included young performers who competed in local talent contests.
Girl’s Tyme originally included Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and Támar Davis. The lineup changed during its early years, and the group later appeared on the television talent program Star Search in 1993.
Although Girl’s Tyme did not win on Star Search, the experience helped focus the performers and their management. Mathew Knowles eventually became the group’s manager, and the act signed with Columbia Records after further lineup and name changes.
The group became Destiny’s Child in the late 1990s. Its early history is sometimes simplified, but Girl’s Tyme was an important developmental stage rather than a completely separate unrelated project. Beyoncé and Rowland remained central members as the group evolved into one of the best-selling female groups in music history.
