Beyoncé’s surprise album released in April 2016 and exploring Black womanhood was Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after an HBO premiere of an accompanying hour-long film. The album combines songs, poetry, spoken narration, and visual storytelling. Its themes include betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, family history, race, and resilience.
The project drew on multiple musical styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, reggae, and hip-hop. Beyoncé collaborated with artists such as Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. The album’s visual structure helped make it a major example of the modern visual-album format.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 59th Grammy Awards. It lost that award to Adele’s 25, but Beyoncé won Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video during the ceremony.
