Lemonade is the Beyoncé album whose visual story premiered in 2016 and explored Black womanhood.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade is Beyoncé’s sixth studio album. It was accompanied by a one-hour film broadcast on HBO, structured around poetic chapters including “Intuition,” “Denial,” “Anger,” “Apathy,” “Accountability,” “Reformation,” and “Hope.”
The album blends R&B, soul, rock, blues, pop, hip-hop, and country influences. Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” The project examines family, betrayal, healing, ancestry, race, and resilience, while featuring contributions from artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, and The Weeknd.
Some people use “Lemonade” to refer only to the visual film, but it names both the studio album and the broader audiovisual project. The album won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album and received an Album of the Year nomination.
