Lemonade is the Beyoncé album presented as a visual album inspired by themes of Black womanhood.
Released in 2016, Lemonade combines music with a one-hour film that was broadcast on HBO and later distributed through digital and streaming services. Its songs move through multiple styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, and hip-hop. The project draws on ideas of ancestry, infidelity, grief, anger, reconciliation, and resilience.
The visual album includes appearances by figures such as Serena Williams, Zendaya, and Beyoncé's daughter Blue Ivy Carter. Its poetry and imagery were influenced in part by the work of British-Somali poet Warsan Shire. The title is connected to a proverb about making lemonade from lemons, a line also associated with Beyoncé's grandmother in the film.
Lemonade is often confused with Renaissance because both are ambitious concept-driven albums, but Renaissance was released in 2022 and focuses more strongly on dance and club music. Lemonade earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
