Lemonade is the Beyoncé album presented as a visual album about Black womanhood and history.
Released in 2016, Lemonade combines songs with a one-hour film that premiered on HBO. Its themes include betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, family, ancestry, and cultural identity. The project draws on poetry by Warsan Shire and incorporates musical styles including R&B, rock, country, blues, and gospel.
The album was widely discussed because many listeners interpreted its narrative through the subject of marital infidelity, although its story is broader than a single relationship. Lemonade became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive number-one album in the United States. It followed her self-titled 2013 visual album and preceded Everything Is Love, her 2018 collaborative album with Jay-Z.
