Lemonade is the Beyoncé album presented as a visual album about a woman’s marriage and infidelity.
Released in 2016, Lemonade combines music with a one-hour film that premiered on HBO. The project moves through themes commonly described as intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption.
Its songs draw on R&B, rock, soul, hip-hop, country, and blues. The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” It also features guest appearances from artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and James Blake.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Although it did not win that category, it won Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video for “Formation.” Its visual storytelling made it a major example of the modern multimedia album.
