Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade was released alongside a visual film of the same name.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after the premiere of its hour-long HBO film. The project combines music, poetry, spoken narration, and imagery into a continuous audiovisual work. Its songs move through themes including betrayal, grief, anger, reconciliation, Black womanhood, family, and cultural memory.
The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” It features guest appearances from artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. The visual film uses chapters with titles such as “Intuition,” “Denial,” “Anger,” and “Redemption,” giving the work a deliberate narrative structure.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album, winning the latter. It is distinct from Renaissance, Beyoncé’s 2022 album and the first act in her planned three-act project.
