Lemonade includes “Formation” and won the 2017 Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Beyoncé released Lemonade on April 23, 2016, after premiering its accompanying film on HBO. The album is structured as a broad emotional journey, with sections associated with feelings such as anger, forgiveness, and hope.
Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” The visual album combines music with poetry, imagery, and historical references, while addressing identity, family, betrayal, resilience, and Black womanhood.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned nine Grammy nominations. Although it did not win Album of the Year, it won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 59th Grammy Awards in 2017. “Formation” also won Best Music Video, making the project especially significant in Beyoncé’s visual and political storytelling.
