Lemonade is the Beyoncé album that includes “Formation” and its accompanying visual film Lemonade.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade is Beyoncé's sixth studio album. It was introduced through an hour-long film broadcast on HBO, and the album became closely associated with that visual work, which combines music videos, poetry, and a narrative about betrayal, reconciliation, family, and identity.
The album's songs move through several styles, including R&B, rock, country, blues, and hip-hop. “Formation,” released before the full album, became especially prominent for its references to Black identity, Southern culture, and political visibility.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Its release also helped make the visual album format a defining part of Beyoncé's 2010s work.
