The song “Love on Top” appears on Beyoncé’s fourth studio album, 4. Released in 2011, the album marked a change from some of the more heavily electronic production associated with her previous work.
Beyoncé drew on older soul, funk, pop, and R&B traditions while recording 4. “Love on Top” is especially known for its series of upward key changes near the end, which raise the vocal register and create the song’s climactic finish.
The album also includes “Run the World (Girls),” “Best Thing I Never Had,” and “Countdown.” 4 debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and became her fourth consecutive solo album to reach that position.
The title is written as the numeral 4, not the word “Four.” Beyoncé has said the number has personal significance, including connections to birthdays and important dates in her family and marriage.
