Beyoncé’s 2016 album centered on a visual film released alongside its music is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, after the premiere of an hour-long HBO film of the same name. The project combines songs, poetry, spoken passages, and imagery, creating a continuous meditation on relationships, betrayal, healing, family, race, and Black womanhood.
The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” Its guests include Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd. The record moves through a sequence of emotional chapters, often identified by titles such as “Anger,” “Apathy,” and “Hope.”
Lemonade is sometimes confused with Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled visual album. Both projects use accompanying film, but Lemonade is the release associated with the 2016 HBO premiere and its chapter-based narrative. It received nine Grammy nominations and won Best Urban Contemporary Album.
