Beyoncé’s album Lemonade centers its visual narrative on a chaptered journey through grief and reconciliation.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade was accompanied by an hour-long film broadcast on HBO. The film combines music videos, poetry, striking imagery, and a sequence of emotional chapters including “Intuition,” “Denial,” “Anger,” “Apathy,” “Accountability,” and “Redemption.”
The album draws on blues, rock, country, soul, pop, and hip-hop. Its themes include betrayal, Black womanhood, family history, resilience, and healing. It also incorporates the voices of poets Warsan Shire and Somali Kabuye, among others.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Beyoncé’s earlier self-titled album was also a visual album, but Lemonade is the project most specifically associated with a narrated, chapter-based film.
