Beyoncé's Lemonade became the first album to win the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade was accompanied by a one-hour film broadcast on HBO. Its songs move through themes commonly described as stages of grief and reconciliation, while drawing on blues, rock, soul, reggae, country, and hip-hop. The album includes “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.”
At the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in 2017, Lemonade won Best Urban Contemporary Album. The category had been introduced for the 2013 Grammy Awards, making Lemonade its first winning album. Beyoncé was also nominated for Album of the Year, but Adele's 25 won that award. This distinction is sometimes confused with Lemonade's nominations for other Grammy categories or with Beyoncé's later win for Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance. Lemonade's combination of a full album and visual film helped establish the modern visual-album format as a major pop release strategy.
