Cowboy Carter became the first Beyoncé album by a Black woman to win the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2025.
Beyoncé released Cowboy Carter on March 29, 2024, as her eighth studio album. The record explores country music, Americana, rock, soul, and other traditions while examining the often-overlooked contributions of Black artists to country music.
At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on February 2, 2025, Cowboy Carter won Album of the Year and Best Country Album. Its victory made Beyoncé the first Black woman to win Album of the Year since Lauryn Hill won for The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1997, while Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win Best Country Album.
The title is sometimes shortened in casual discussion, but Cowboy Carter is the album’s official title. It follows Renaissance, the first act in Beyoncé’s planned three-part album project.
