Which bassist performed on Metallica's 1991 self-titled album?

The story behind the answer

Jason Newsted performed bass on Metallica's 1991 self-titled album.

Newsted had joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. The Black Album was his second studio album with the band, following 1988’s ...And Justice for All. He remained Metallica’s bassist through the 1990s before leaving in 2001.

The album’s core lineup consisted of James Hetfield on vocals and rhythm guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, and Newsted on bass. Bob Rock produced the record alongside Hetfield and Ulrich.

Newsted’s involvement is sometimes obscured by discussion of the bass-heavy production controversies surrounding ...And Justice for All. On The Black Album, bass was audibly present in the finished mix, contributing to the record’s weight and clarity. Robert Trujillo did not join Metallica until 2003, so he was not part of this album’s lineup.
