Pulp replaced The Stone Roses as a 1995 Glastonbury headline act. The change happened shortly before the festival after The Stone Roses were forced to withdraw from their scheduled Pyramid Stage appearance.
The 1995 bill already included Oasis and The Cure as the other headline acts. Pulp stepped into the vacant slot during a crucial moment in their rise, just after the release of “Common People”, which became one of the defining songs of the Britpop era.
The Stone Roses’ withdrawal was linked to guitarist John Squire breaking his collarbone in a cycling or mountain-biking accident. The band later appeared at the Pilton Show in September, but did not play the planned Glastonbury headline set.
Pulp’s replacement performance became one of the festival’s landmark sets. Frontman Jarvis Cocker led the crowd through the band’s sharply observed indie-pop songs, helping turn an emergency substitution into a defining Glastonbury moment.
