Festivalgoers called the new 2008 field near the Sacred Space and Park Stage “Flagtopia.”
The field was introduced in 2008 and was not given an official name by the organisers. Attendees coined “Flagtopia” because of the many flags displayed there, turning an informal nickname into the area’s commonly recognised identity.
The new space appeared during a period when Glastonbury was expanding and refining its site. The 2008 festival also added the Shangri-La area, enlarged the John Peel stage and expanded the grounds by roughly 40 to 50 acres.
The environmental story of 2008 is another important piece of context. After abandoned tents became a serious problem in 2007—and a cow died after ingesting a tent peg—the festival introduced its Love the Farm, Leave No Trace campaign and distributed biodegradable tent pegs. Flagtopia is therefore easy to confuse with established areas such as The Glade, Arcadia or Lost Vagueness, but those names refer to different festival spaces.
