Which band member wrote the main riff for Metallica’s “My Friend of Misery”?
Answer
Jason Newsted
Answer
Jason Newsted
Jason Newsted wrote the main riff for Metallica’s “My Friend of Misery.” The song appeared on the band’s 1991 album, commonly called The Black Album, and began as an instrumental idea.
Newsted joined Metallica after bassist Cliff Burton died in 1986. Although his instrumental writing contributions were often less visible than the Hetfield–Ulrich songwriting partnership, “My Friend of Misery” stands out as a clear example of his musical input on the album.
The piece was originally intended to continue Metallica’s earlier tradition of including an instrumental on each album. It ultimately received lyrics and became a full vocal song. The writing credit does not mean Newsted wrote every part alone: Metallica songs were developed collectively, and the album’s credits include contributions from multiple members. Still, the central riff is specifically associated with Newsted’s original idea.
