Which award did Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar win for its visual effects?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The film received the award at the 87th Academy Awards, recognizing the visual-effects work used to depict space travel, wormholes, black holes, and distant worlds. The effects team included Paul Franklin, Oliver James, Eugenie von Tunzelmann, and Ian Hunter.

Interstellar’s black-hole imagery was developed with scientific input from physicist Kip Thorne. The production used computer-generated imagery alongside practical photography and large-format cinematography to create an internally consistent representation of the film’s space environments.

The award is sometimes confused with Interstellar’s other nominations. The film was also nominated for original score, sound mixing, sound editing, production design, and film editing, but it won only the visual-effects Oscar.
