Roald Dahl wrote the novel adapted into Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Dahl’s children’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was published in 1964. It introduces Charlie Bucket, a poor child who wins access to Willy Wonka’s extraordinary factory after finding one of five golden tickets.
Burton’s 2005 film adapts Dahl’s novel while adding more background for Willy Wonka. Johnny Depp played Wonka, and Freddie Highmore played Charlie. The film includes the book’s major factory events, including the visits to the chocolate room, the inventing room, and other fantastical production spaces.
The story had previously been adapted as Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1971, starring Gene Wilder. The different titles can cause confusion, but both films are based on Dahl’s novel.
