Which Australian state is Brisbane in?

The story behind the answer

Brisbane is in Queensland, one of Australia’s six states. It is Queensland’s capital and largest city, situated in the state’s southeast on the Brisbane River near Moreton Bay.

Queensland occupies Australia’s northeastern mainland and is known for tropical coastlines, the Great Barrier Reef, inland ranges and large agricultural regions. Brisbane lies farther south than the state’s tropical north, but it remains Queensland’s principal political, commercial and cultural centre. The city’s metropolitan area extends well beyond the central business district along the river and coastal plain.

Queensland became a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859, and Brisbane was selected as its capital that same year. This is why Brisbane is not in New South Wales, although the city’s early colonial history was tied to that colony. Other listed options are Australian states too: Western Australia is in the west, Tasmania is an island state, and Victoria is in the southeast.
