Which Australian city is home to the Melbourne Cricket Ground?
Answer
Melbourne
Answer
Melbourne
The Melbourne Cricket Ground is located in Melbourne, Australia.
Usually called the MCG or simply “the G,” the stadium stands in Yarra Park, close to Melbourne’s central business district in the state of Victoria. It is operated by the Melbourne Cricket Club and has been associated with cricket since its establishment in 1853.
The MCG is one of cricket’s most historic venues. It hosted the first Test match, played between Australia and England in 1877, and later hosted the first One Day International in 1971. It remains a regular venue for Australia’s Boxing Day Test, a major fixture traditionally beginning on 26 December.
The stadium is also strongly connected with Australian rules football and hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The name can cause confusion because Melbourne is both the city and part of the ground’s official name, while Victoria is the state. Brisbane, Perth and Sydney are all major Australian cricket cities, but none is home to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
