Which athlete won three athletics gold medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome?
Answer
Wilma Rudolph
Answer
Wilma Rudolph
Wilma Rudolph won three athletics gold medals at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.
Rudolph won the women’s 100 metres, 200 metres and 4 × 100 metres relay, becoming the first American woman to win three athletics gold medals at a single Olympics. Her performances earned her international recognition as one of the leading sprinters of her generation.
She had overcome serious childhood illness and wore a leg brace after contracting polio at a young age. Doctors once feared she might never walk normally, but she recovered and developed into an elite athlete through persistent training.
Rudolph’s three victories made her a major sporting and civil-rights figure in the United States. She retired from competitive athletics in 1962, aged 22, and later worked as a coach and educator. Her Rome achievement is sometimes confused with Fanny Blankers-Koen’s four athletics gold medals at the 1948 Olympics.
