Which athlete won the women's 100 metres hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Dawn Harper won the women's 100 metres hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Harper, representing the United States, won in 12.54 seconds. She finished ahead of Australia's Sally McLellan and Canada's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, while the race favourite Lolo Jones clipped the ninth hurdle and did not finish in a medal position.

The event replaced the women's 80-metre hurdles with the longer 100-metre distance in 1969. Olympic hurdlers must clear ten barriers, making rhythm and stride pattern as important as maximum sprint speed.

Harper later won another Olympic medal at London 2012, taking silver. Her Beijing victory was especially notable because she had not been widely regarded as the favourite before the final.
