Which athlete won the men's modern pentathlon at the 1912 Summer Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Gösta Lilliehöök won the men's modern pentathlon at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. The Swedish athlete became the first Olympic champion in the modern pentathlon, an event created to test the broad skills expected of a military officer.

The 1912 competition combined pistol shooting, swimming, fencing, horse riding and a cross-country run. Competitors completed the disciplines across several days, making the event one of the most demanding multi-sport contests on the Olympic program.

Lilliehöök finished ahead of fellow Swede Gösta Runö, while American George S. Patton placed fifth. Patton later became famous as a United States Army general, but his Olympic appearance came decades before the Second World War.

The modern pentathlon differs from the ancient pentathlon, which included events such as discus and javelin. Its Olympic format has changed several times, but the five-discipline concept has remained its defining feature.
