Which athlete won the men's marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Abebe Bikila won the men's marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Bikila finished in 2:15:16, setting a world best and becoming the first athlete to win an Olympic marathon while representing Ethiopia. He famously ran barefoot because the available shoes caused discomfort, making his victory one of the most memorable performances in Olympic distance-running history.

The race took place on 10 September 1960 and finished near the Arch of Constantine. Bikila pulled away late from Morocco's Abdeslam Rhadi, who finished second. His victory also made him the first Black African Olympic champion.

Bikila successfully defended his marathon title at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, this time running in shoes only weeks after an appendectomy. He remains one of the defining figures in marathon history, although the Olympic marathon distance itself is standardized at 42.195 kilometres.
