Carl Lewis won four consecutive Olympic long-jump gold medals from 1984 through 1996.
The American athlete won the event at Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. His achievement made him the only athlete to win the same individual athletics event at four consecutive Olympics.
Lewis was also an outstanding sprinter. At Los Angeles 1984 he won four gold medals in the 100 metres, 200 metres, 4×100-metre relay and long jump, matching Jesse Owens’s four-gold performance from 1936.
His long-jump streak included close contests and strong performances. In 1991, Mike Powell broke Bob Beamon’s long-standing world record, but Lewis still won Olympic long-jump gold in 1992 and 1996. Olympic titles and world records are separate achievements.
