Answer
Florence Griffith-Joyner
Answer
Florence Griffith-Joyner
Florence Griffith-Joyner set the women’s 100 metres world record of 10.49 seconds in 1988.
She ran the time at the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis on 16 July 1988. The performance remains the ratified world record and is one of the longest-standing records in international athletics. Griffith-Joyner, often called “Flo-Jo,” was known for her speed, distinctive racing style and colorful competition clothing.
The record has attracted discussion because the wind gauge reported zero wind, while unusually strong gusts were recorded elsewhere around the track. The mark nevertheless remains officially recognized by World Athletics. Griffith-Joyner won three gold medals and one silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, including the individual 100 metres and 200 metres.
Her 200-metre world record, 21.34 seconds, was also set in 1988 and remains the official world record. The 100-metre record is separate from Olympic records, which measure the fastest performances specifically achieved at the Games.
