Which athlete set the Olympic men’s triple-jump record of 18.09 metres at Atlanta 1996?

The story behind the answer

Kenny Harrison set the Olympic men’s triple-jump record of 18.09 metres at Atlanta 1996.

Harrison won the gold medal with an 18.09-metre jump, defeating Bulgaria’s Khristo Markov’s previous Olympic record. The mark remains the Olympic record for the event. Harrison had missed the 1992 Olympics because of a knee injury, making his Atlanta victory especially significant.

The triple jump consists of a hop, a step and a jump. Athletes must complete the first two phases on the same leg before landing in the sandpit. Speed on the runway and precise phase balance are essential.

The Olympic record is different from the world record. Great Britain’s Jonathan Edwards holds the world record at 18.29 metres, set at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg.
