Usain Bolt set the men’s 200 metres world record of 19.19 seconds at the 2009 World Championships.
Bolt ran 19.19 seconds in Berlin on 20 August 2009, lowering his own world record of 19.30 seconds from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His Berlin performance remains one of the defining sprint marks in athletics history.
Although this question concerns a world championship, Bolt’s achievement is closely associated with the Summer Olympics. At Beijing 2008, he won the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4×100 metres relay, and at London 2012 he again won all three events. He also won the 200 metres at Rio 2016.
The 19.19-second mark is sometimes confused with Bolt’s 100-metre world record of 9.58 seconds, also set in Berlin in 2009. Bolt retired after the 2017 World Championships and is widely known by the nickname “Lightning Bolt.”
