Which athlete scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history?

The story behind the answer

Nadia Comăneci scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history at Montreal 1976.

She earned the unprecedented score on the uneven bars during the team competition. The scoreboard was not designed to display 10.00, so it showed 1.00, creating one of the most famous visual moments in Olympic history. Comăneci went on to receive six more perfect 10s at those Games.

The Romanian gymnast won three gold medals in Montreal: the all-around, uneven bars and balance beam. She also won a team silver and a floor exercise bronze. Her all-around victory made her the first female gymnast to receive a perfect Olympic all-around score.

Comăneci later won two more gold medals at Moscow 1980. Her Olympic career included nine medals in total, and her Montreal performance helped make artistic gymnastics one of the Games’ most watched sports.
