Which athlete introduced the Fosbury Flop to Olympic high jumping?
Answer
Dick Fosbury
Answer
Dick Fosbury
Dick Fosbury introduced the Fosbury Flop to Olympic high jumping and used it to win gold at the 1968 Mexico City Games.
Instead of jumping face-first or straddling the bar, Fosbury approached in a curved run and cleared the bar backward, landing on his upper back. The technique looked unconventional when he developed it as a teenager, but it allowed his body’s centre of mass to pass under the bar while his back crossed above it.
Fosbury cleared 2.24 metres in Mexico City, setting an Olympic record at the time. His method soon became the dominant technique in elite high jumping and remains standard today.
The style is named after Fosbury, but he did not invent every backward-jumping movement from scratch; earlier athletes had experimented with related ideas. His major contribution was refining and popularising the technique at the highest level.
